If you cause an accident, Texas law requires that you pay the medical expenses and property damage for the person you hit. You also most show proof of insurance if asked by a police officer. The required minimums are $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for medical expenses; and $30,000 for property damage. (You are personally responsible for costs above the policy limit.) Liability auto insurance does not pay for your medical bills or car repairs.
If you do not have coverage, you may have to pay a large fine.
The penalties for violating the state’s financial responsibility laws are
First offense: fine of $175 to $350
Additional offenses: fine of $350 to $1,000, suspension of your driver’s license, and impoundment of your car
Offense without a driver’s license: $2,000 maximum fine, 180 days in jail, or both
Offense if you cause an accident with serious injuries or death: $4,000 maximum fine, one year in jail, or both.
“Full Coverage” auto insurance
What is “full coverage auto insurance”? There are many aspects so make sure you are comparing apples to apples. For example there are Collision and Comprehensive policies. Collision covers the repairs on your car if you are in accident regardless of fault. You pay a deductible. Lower deductibles are available for a higher premium. If you were not at fault your insurance bill the insurance of person causing the accident.
Comprehensive covers damage to your car from events other than collision. For example, damage by hail. It may also cover glass replacement. Many policies offer windshield repairs without you paying a deductible.
Often people with full coverage also have towing, car rental while theirs are being repaired, roadside assistance, etc. Possibly the most important additional coverage is for uninsured motorists. 1 out of every 7 drivers are uninsured. so protect your self and your passengers.
Ask what your “full coverage” actually includes. You may need to pay a little extra if you want additional coverage.
