Protect your personal property with renters insurance

Renters insurance can help you replace damaged or stolen items. It also provides additional living expenses if you must temporarily move while your apartment or rented house is restored after a fire or water damage event. Most policies also provide for liability coverage.

What kinds of belongings are covered by Renters Insurance?

Most renters do not realize what their possessions are worth. Property in a typical apartment is worth  $25,000 to $35,000. What it would cost to replace personal property. Consider:

  • Clothing (Most individuals own about $7,000 worth)
  • Electronics–TVs, surround sound systems, Blu-Ray and DVD players.  Computers, tablets, game consoles. Cell phones, music systems
  • Jewelry and watches
  • Weights, sporting equipment, camping equipment, golf clubs, tennis rackets
  • Collections–coins, tea cups, DVDs, comic books, guns
  • Furniture and appliances

Ask if a policy covers replacement value or actual cash value. Replacement value will pay enough to buy a new one. If you bought a 44 inch big screen TV for $800 five years ago, you should get enough to replace it. With actual cash value payments, you will only be paid the amount your five year old TV is worth today.  Actual Cash Value policies are cheaper but weigh the options carefully.

Property you take with you in your car or on vacation is also covered against loss.

Additional Living Expenses

Apartments and rental homes are insured by the landlord. If their is a fire you may need to relocate.  Where do you go during repairs? Who pays for it? Renters insurance  covers this. It will pay for a temporary residence and other expenses. No need to worry!

Liability

Liability protection is included in your renters insurance. It covers accidents where guests are injured in your apartment. It may also cover damage to the apartment or rental home that you caused by accident.

How much does Renters Insurance cost?

Many policies cost as little as $16 – $20 a month. (About the cost of a pizza.) If you have an auto policy, discounts may make your combined payment go up only $5 per month or less. Have questions about renters insurance?
